PANAGBENGA: A Festival of Living Colors

PANAGBENGA

Are you ready to experience one of the most colorful and vibrant festivals in the Philippines?

As the season turns it leaves to summer, a time when the cool climate in Baguio City comes alive with the sounds and sights of the Panagbenga Festival known as the "Flower Festival". During the event, the streets are adorned with vibrant decorations, and the sound of gongs and drums can be heard throughout the city.

This festival is a month-long celebration that culminates in a grand parade, features stunning flower floats adorned with colorful blooms, dancers in elaborate costumes, and lively street performances that will leave locals and visitors feeling energized and excited as they make their way through the city streets.

The word "Panagbenga" is derived from the Kankanaey term for "season of blooming", and is all about celebrating the abundance of flowers that bloom during this time of year.

But the Panagbenga Festival isn't just about the floats and parades, it is a celebration of the rich culture and history of the Cordillera region of the Philippines including traditional street dances that feature the colorful and intricate traditional clothing and dances of the different tribes in the region.

The Festival is designed to boost tourism in "The City of Pines", which it deems successful. It began in 1995, just a few years after a devastating earthquake struck the region. Despite the devastation caused by the earthquake, the people of Baguio City and the surrounding Cordillera region came together to celebrate the beauty of their culture and the strength of their community. It serves as a reminder of the resilience of the Cordilleran people.

Another popular feature is the drum and lyre competition, which features marching bands from different schools in the region. The competition is a lively and spirited event that showcases the musical talents of the students.

If you're looking for a unique and unforgettable cultural experience, look no further than the Panagbenga Festival every year in February, the breathtaking city of Baguio is not to be missed. An opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich traditions of the Cordillera region, and to witness the beauty and hospitality of the people who call it home.

Mabuhay!
